Man found dead in downtown Calgary apartment fire

Firefighters rescue man injured while pruning tree

Arson investigators and the medical examiner are probing a fire in a 16th-floor unit of a downtown apartment building where a man was found deceased.

EMS were called to the building in the 900 block of 9 Ave. S.W. just before 11 a.m. Friday by a neighbour asking them to check on the welfare of the person inside the unit. Paramedics arrived to find a deceased man — believed to be in his 60s — and heavy smoke damage throughout the suite.

Police and fire crews were called and a search showed there had been a significant fire recently.

Initial checks led investigators to believe the fire was accidental, however the investigation continues. An autopsy on the man is scheduled for this coming week.

Officials will also be looking into the status of the building's fire alarms as no 911 calls were made regarding the blaze.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
