Homicide detectives are investigating a suspicious death after a man was found dead in a park near a residential area in the city's north end.

The man was found early Sunday morning on the grass between 103th Street and a playground, next to the Lorelei elementary school.

Police covered the body with a black tent while they investigated the scene, according to neighbouring residents.

"There were probably 15 or 20 vehicles," said Walter Sellick, whose backyard borders on the park.

"Usually it's a fairly quiet neighbourhood — we've had the ordinary problems that any place has, but never anything like this."

Three other schools are situated in Lorelei Park, the green space where police said the body was found, including the Lorelei Beaumaris Playschool.

Javiera Solis often visits the park with her toddler and younger sister, who attends Lorelai School.

"It makes me feel uncomfortable," Solis said. "This shouldn't be happening here."

Solis said she felt relieved none of the children in her family saw the body.

"It's scary," she said. "I'd be traumatized if that happened or if I had to see that."

An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday.

The Edmonton Police Service is asking anyone who witnessed or heard anything suspicious in the area to contact them.
