Man freed after being trapped between metal coils in industrial accident

A man has been transported to hospital after he became trapped between two large coils of metal at an industrial facility in North York.

Emergency services were called to the facility on Fenmar Drive shortly after 3 a.m.

"What we can surmise happened is that as he was cutting the coils one of the coils opened, trapping his leg. He couldn't move, but he was conscious and breathing the whole time," said Toronto Fire Services District Chief Stephan Powell.

Firefighters were able to free the man, who was taken to hospital with injuries to his lower leg.

Powell said each metal coil weighed approximately 20,000 pounds.

"You can imagine the weight behind that," he said. "The average car weighs 2-3000 pounds, maybe 4 for a minivan. So [this is] the equivalent of 5 minivans."

Whenever Toronto Fire Services attends a workplace and a worker is injured, they must report it to the Ministry of Labour who will launch their own investigation.
