Man gets 2 and a half years in prison for biting off girlfriend's lip

A Yellowknife man has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison after biting off a piece of a woman's lip.

Sonny Stanley Keevik was convicted of aggravated assault for the incident.

According to court documents, the two were in a relationship and had been drinking the night of Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015. Keevik reportedly told her to be quiet and said he was going to stop her from talking. He then bit off the majority of her lower lip.

It was the latest in more than a dozen violent crimes Keevik has been convicted of in the last 20 years, many against women with whom he had been in a relationship.

Keevik told the court he's haunted by the legacy of residential school and has struggled with alcohol addictions his whole life.

Aggravated assault carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison. Keevik was sentenced to two and a half years. According to court documents, the judge recommended he be eligible for early release.

The victim is awaiting plastic surgery to repair her lip.
