SINGAPORE — After a dispute, a man headbutted a bystander who tried to de-escalate the situation, fracturing the victim's nose.

Tyson Wayne Plant, a 32-year-old United Kingdom citizen, was fined $5,000 on Thursday (20 January), after he pleaded guilty to one count of voluntarily causing hurt.

Plant had gone to Kilo Lounge at Tanjong Pagar Road on 18 August 2018 for drinks. While outside the lounge at about 3.10am, Plant got into a disagreement with other unidentified patrons.

One of the patrons punched Plant in the face. The 30-year-old male victim, who was also outside the lounge, intervened in an attempt to de-escalate the situation.

After the victim began to walk away, Plant followed him. When the victim turned around to face him, Plant headbutted the man on the face once.

The victim sought medical treatment and was later found to have a fractured nose. He was given medical leave from 18 to 31 August 2018.

Plant paid the victim $12,000 as compensation in May last year.

Plant’s lawyer said in mitigation that his client had not initiated the violence. Plant had reacted on the spur of the moment.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Keith Jieren Thirumaran left the sentence to the court.

For voluntarily causing hurt, Plant may be jailed up to two years, or fined up to $5,000, or both.
