Man in hospital after motorcycle hits train

A man is in life-threatening condition after his motorcycle collided with a train on a rural road east of Edson Sunday afternoon.

Edson RCMP were called to the scene, at Range Road 154 near Township Road 542, at around 12:30 p.m..

They say the motorcyclist hit the front engine of the train, which was travelling west. The 26-year-old rider was taken to hospital in Edmonton.

Police are investigating the cause of the collision, but have determined that the railway's warning lights and sounds were working at the time.

It was the second motorcycle injury in northern Alberta Sunday. Leduc RCMP were called to an accident scene near Township Road 504 and Range Road 270 around 6:30 a.m.. There, they found a 52-year-old Calmar man dead after his motorcycle crashed.

Alcohol and speed are thought to be factors in that crash.
