Tay Valley man dead after ATV plunges through lake ice near Perth

Man dies in Highway 427 rollover crash

An 80-year-old Tay Valley Township man is dead after his ATV fell through the ice of a lake near Perth, Ont., Ontario Provincial Police say.

The body of Elmer Abercrombie was found Sunday afternoon by the OPP's underwater search and recovery unit beneath the surface of Bennett Lake.

Abercrombie had apparently been ice fishing on the lake the day before. His family reported him missing around 9 p.m. Saturday night, after he was a few hours late returning home.

Police said the man's family found a large hole in the ice on Bennett Lake and became concerned he had fallen through.

'You have to be sure of the ice'

Lanark County OPP Const. Greg Streng urged anyone venturing onto frozen lake ice with an ATV to wait until conditions were more suitable.

"It's too soon. You have to be sure of the ice. It just seems like it's a little too early," Streng told CBC News Sunday afternoon.

"You've got to wait until there's a good mass of ice before you go out there."

Bennett Lake is approximately 100 kilometres southwest of Ottawa.
