Man pushing a bicycle killed in hit-and-run on metro-east road

A 64-year-old man who was pushing his bicycle in the 1600 block of Black Lane in Caseyville was struck and killed by a vehicle.

The driver left the scene and police are currently looking on the lookout, St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department Lt. James Hendricks said.

Deputies were dispatched to the scene on the report of a man down alongside the roadway on Saturday, he said. He was transported to Memorial Hospital in Belleville with severe injuries.

“He succumbed to to the injuries while at Belleville Memorial,” Hendricks said.

The victim was later identified as Benigno Torres.

The Ilinois State Police Reconstruction team was called to investigate.
