Man released after questioning in fatal shooting

No charges will be laid in connection with a fatal shooting in Baxters Corner in November 2012 after it was determined the shooting took place in self defence.

The 35-year-old man arrested following a fatal shooting incident in Baxters Corner has been released from custody.

The shooting happened Saturday evening on Raymond Drive in Baxters Corner about 30 kilometres northeast of Saint John.

Hampton RCMP said three men went to the home, where a fourth man was inside. Shots were fired and the three were hit.

"Investigators learned that these people who were involved in this incident knew of each other, so they're treating this as an isolated incident," said RCMP Cpl. Chantal Farrah. "So we believe that the person who was released is not a threat to the community."

Farrah said the incident was in response to an earlier altercation in Saint John.

"The 35-year-old man had been violently assaulted by two men in the Saint John area," she said.

"A few hours later an armed group of men, including both men who assaulted him earlier in the day, arrived at the location of Route 820 and that's when the altercation continued or occurred."

One of the three, a 31-year-old man from Baxters Corner, was killed. The other two are in hospital with serious injuries.

Farrah said no names are being released and the investigation continues.
