RCMP say a man was sent to hospital in life-threatening condition early Saturday morning after being hit while walking on the Queen Elizabeth Highway, just south of Airdrie, Alta.

The man was walking in the southbound lanes of the highway around 4:07 a.m., according to RCMP.

Airdrie Rural RCMP attended the scene to find that the man had been hit by a vehicle. EMS transported him to hospital.

Airdrie RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney said there was no update on the man's condition as of early Saturday morning, adding it was unknown at this time what circumstances led to the collision.

The southbound lanes of the highway were closed for approximately five hours before reopening.

RCMP is asking anyone with information to contact the Airdrie detachment at 403-945-7200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
