Man seriously hurt in Kananaskis backcountry fall

A man is in serious condition in a Calgary hospital after falling a long distance in the Kananaskis backcountry,

The man, believed to be in his early 30s, had to be rescued from the Burstall Pass area Sunday afternoon in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park.

An alpine helicopter was used to transport the man to a day use area where a ground ambulance crew was able to assess his injuries.

He was then airlifted by STARS to the Foothills Hospital, said Calgary EMS spokesman Adam Loria.

"I believe it was in an area quite difficult to access, or possibly inaccessible by vehicle, so again we worked with our partners in safety to have that patient brought to us and then again we were able to provide some assessment treatment for injuries sustained. And again, just given location and condition, the best route of transport was by air."

He said emergency crews had to respond to several accidents over the long weekend. But given the good weather, he said it wasn't busier than usual.
