The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office identified the man who shot and killed a woman in a driveway outside of a Harrisburg home Monday night. They said he died in an apparent suicide after shooting at two deputies.

The deputies who responded near the Providence Manor subdivision saw Willie Lawrence Wimbley, 47, shoot and kill Chartara Laverta Courtney, 43, in the driveway, a Tuesday press release said. The two previously dated, the sheriff’s office said.

Wimbley exchanged gunfire with the deputies after shooting Courtney, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The sheriff’s office said deputies are waiting for confirmation from the medical examiner’s office and the results of an investigation by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation before making a final determination on Wimbley’s cause of death.

The deputies who fired were placed on leave during the investigation.
