Police seeking suspect after Lawrence East station shooting

Police are investigating the shooting that took place near Lawrence Avenue East.

Police are still looking for a suspect after a 19-year-old man was shot near the Lawrence East RT station.

The man is being treated in hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Police, who have not found a gun, say they are looking for a man who is over six feet tall and wearing a black hat.

"It was just really quick, just went 'pow, pow, pow,'" said Abeer Zaidi, who didn't realize that she had heard gunshots until she saw the police.

Police say the man was shot in the stomach and are investigating the incident and examining security cameras in the area.

"I was quite frightened," said Zaidi. "I had to call my mom as soon as I understood what was going on. She got scared too and told me to come back home."

The man was found shot on the GO train tracks on the Stouffville line near Lawrence Avenue East at around 1 p.m. Friday, police said. Toronto EMS had previously said the man had life-threatening injuries.

One resident called it a "very safe neighbourhood."

"I can't imagine anyone shooting someone here," said the man.

The Lawrence East RT station remains open.
