Man shot by police after high-speed chase listed in stable condition

The condition of a man shot by Winnipeg police after a high-speed chase Monday morning is improving.

The 26-year-old was rushed to hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery. He is now listed as stable, police said on Tuesday.

He was shot after leading police on a chase in the St. Boniface neighbourhood around 11 a.m. Monday. The chase came to a crashing halt when the car he was driving slammed into a truck in the parking lot of an industrial business on Archibald Street.

A man who works across the street from the crash told CBC the car was immediately pinned in by police vehicles but the driver climbed out, jumped across one of the police cars and ran down the street.

"Maybe 30 seconds later, we heard a whole bunch of gun shots. I couldn't see anything because it was further [away]," Dwayne McCauley said.

"What police had said to us is that he fired at them and they returned fire."

The 26-year-old man from the car is facing several charges, as is a woman who was in the vehicle with him at the time.

Police spokesman Const. Rob Carver said officers were called about a man with a gun on LaVerendrye Street. When police responded, a car at the scene sped away. Police chased it for a few blocks until it crashed.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is now handling the case and looking for information from witnesses.

Anyone with information or video footage to assist investigators is asked to contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.

The IIU investigates all serious incidents involving police officers in Manitoba, whether occurring while they are on or off duty.
