Man who stabbed wife while guest at wedding pleads guilty

A Gatineau man has pleaded guilty to trying to kill his wife at a wedding in 2012.

Jorge Mejias Sanchez, 49, of Gatineau, Que., was a guest with his wife at a wedding at the Château Cartier in Aylmer on Aug. 25, 2012.

Witnesses said Sanchez struck his wife several times before guests intervened. He then fled, but while police were looking for him he returned and stabbed the woman. He was restrained until police arrived.

Sanchez pleaded guilty in a Gatineau courtroom on Tuesday.

The victim suffered serious lacerations to the back, chest and mouth and has needed more than 100 stitches, according to Crown lawyers.

Unable to return to work, she also suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and receives weekly psychiatric treatment.

She was scheduled to testify, but will not need to as a result of the guilty plea.

The Crown and the defence have recommended a sentence of nine years in prison. He has been in custody since the incident.

The judge will make a decision Wednesday.
