A man tried to smuggle $33,000 of cocaine under his wig. He was detained in Spain

A Colombian man was detained in Barcelona last month for attempting to smuggle more than $33,000 worth of cocaine underneath his poorly-fitted wig.

A man was detained in Barcelona for trying to smuggle more than $33,000 worth of cocaine underneath his poorly fitted wig, police said.

The man, who is Colombian but has yet to be identified, appeared nervous when departing a flight on June 18. He drew suspicion from police as a result.

His hair appeared dramatically outsized, reported Reuters, which led police to ask him to remove his toupee. Underneath, they found a package filled with more than 500 grams – more than a pound – of cocaine.

"There is no limit to the inventiveness of drug traffickers," Barcelona police said in a statement Tuesday, according to Reuters.

Police released two mugshots of the man, one in which he's still wearing the toupee and the other showing the package of cocaine on his head. His eyes are concealed in both images.

It is unclear whether the man, who was charged with a public health violation, was still being detained.

This isn't the first time someone has tried to smuggle cocaine beneath a wig: In 2014, two Portuguese women were arrested upon arriving in Madrid after sewing nearly 3 pounds of cocaine into their wigs.

In June – the same day as this incident in Spain – U.S. authorities seized more than $1 billion worth of cocaine at a Philadelphia port, one of the biggest drug busts in American history.
