SINGAPORE — A man who secretly filmed his wife and her sister and church members in the shower would use screenshots from some of the recordings to accompany sexual fantasy stories he published on an adult forum.

The 41-year-old did so as he enjoyed the attention and acceptance he received from the online community on Sammyboy forum. He also believed that his church community was a hypocrite.

The man was jailed for 28 weeks and fined $6,000 on Wednesday (12 August), after he pleaded guilty to insulting the modesty of women, circulating obscene images online, and making insulting communication by posting pictures of a victim beside pictures of a pornographic star onto the forum.

Another 16 charges of a similar nature were taken into consideration for his sentencing. The man cannot be named to protect the identity of his victims.

In all, the man filmed a total of nine victims, who had stated that they have lost trust in males as a result of his actions.

From 2008, the man began recording the victims in state of undress through pinhole cameras concealed in gadgets. He placed these gadgets in the showers of his house, his mother-in-law’s house and the victims’ house which he had access to due to his close relationship with them.

One of the victims was a 36-year-old church friend who had accompanied the man on regular jogging sessions. The man would usually use the victim’s bathroom after jogging. Between 2008 and 2010, the man would place a pinhole camera in the bathroom to record her showering.

After he recorded these videos, he used screenshots of them as part of a sexual fantasy story that he wrote on Sammyboy forum for other users to consume. In 2013, he uploaded 12 photographs which depicted her breasts to a story that he had written.

He continued to pen the fantasy fiction for another two years but eventually stopped when he got bored. Not wanting to lose his readership however, the man came up with other ideas. Besides using screenshots, he downloaded the photo of one victim from Facebook and uploaded it onto the forum in September 2016 with captions detailing her personal life.

The next month, the man used a screenshot which revealed this victim’s face and posted it on the forum. As a result, another user was able to identify her and her Facebook profile.

The woman came to know of these photos when a friend informed her of their presence on Sammyboy forum.

The man even filmed his sister-in-law showering by placing a hidden camera in her bathroom. In 2013, he used 20 screenshots of this video to incorporate into a sexual fantasy story that he had earlier published on Sammyboy forum.

The man’s sexual advances extended to a childhood friend, whom he recorded showering in his bathroom. He downloaded a picture of the 35-year-old victim from her Facebook and posted it beside a a porn star whom he thought resembled her on Sammyboy forum between 2015 and 2016.

After the man was arrested and his house raided, the man’s memory cards containing two obscene videos were found.

Deputy Public Prosecutor R Arvindren sought 30 weeks’ jail for the man, whom he said managed to escape detection until he started uploading photos which exposed the face of one of the victims.

In his premeditation, the man had bought devices, planted them and invited victims to his house to shower.

The man has been diagnosed with paraphilic disorder, which is a behaviour that involves gaining sexual pleasure or gratification from non-sexual objects or practices.

His lawyer said the man’s condition formed the background to his acts and that he has since gone for counselling and treatment.

The man’s purpose had not been to dox the victims but to gain attention through a storytelling method, said the lawyer. Over the years, he obscured the faces of the victims and only revealed one of the victim’s faces in a bid to get caught, she added.

The lawyer added that the man has the support of his church and family members on the road to recovery. He celebrated his wedding anniversary with his wife on Tuesday.

In sentencing the man, District Judge Adam Nakhoda noted that there were considerable aggravating factors in the case, including the high level of intrusion, the manner in which he filmed his victims, and how he had abused the victims’ trust in him.

The judge noted the “severe” harm caused to the victim whose face was exposed. There was no way to prevent further circulation of her images online, causing her no end of trauma, he added.

The accused acted in a “wholly callous manner” with no consideration on the harm he might cause to the victim, said the judge.
