Man accused of killing teen in Durham turns himself in. Victim may not have been target.
A man wanted on charges of first-degree murder and other offenses in an April shooting turned himself in Saturday, Durham police said Tuesday.
Mychal Quinton Mercer, 33, is accused of killing 19-year-old Ashir Harrington, who was found fatally shot by officers responding to a gunshots call in a parking lot near the intersection of West Morgan and Watts streets around 2 a.m. April 28.
Emergency Medical Services workers took Harrington to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Harrington is survived by his parents, his maternal grandparents and his paternal grandmother, according to an online obituary.
In addition to murder, Mercer has been charged with conspiracy to commit murder, discharging a weapon into an occupied property, and injury to personal property in connection with the April incident.
According to court records, shots were fired into a taco truck on West Main Street, a 2020 Jaguar and a 2018 Dodge Charger.
Police said in an email Thursday they do not know if Harrington was the intended target.
Mercer also was served with an outstanding warrant for an embezzlement charge. He is being held without bail in the Durham County jail.
As of Aug. 10, 145 people had been shot in Durham this year, 21 of them fatally, according to police statistics.
Twenty of the total people shot this year, like Harrington. had been 18 to 20 years old.
