SINGAPORE — A 20-year-old man who sold cannabis was snared in a sting operation by anti-narcotics officers last year, a community court heard.

At the State Courts on Tuesday (21 January), the perpetrator, Tristen Joshua Tan Rae Len, who is now serving his full-time national service, was sentenced to 27 months’ probation.

He pleaded guilty to one charge each of drug trafficking and consumption.

Two other counts of trafficking were considered in sentencing.

Sold cannabis to undercover cop

In July last year, Tan and an undercover officer from the Central Narcotics Bureau agreed to meet at the first floor of West Coast Plaza beside a Toast Box outlet.

As agreed, the cop bought one packet of cannabis from Tan for $490 and the two men parted.

Tan was later arrested. The cannabis he sold weighed 8.53g.

His urine samples also indicated that he had consumed cannabis.

The prosecution sought a deterrent sentence in the form of reformative training while Tan’s lawyer asked for probation.

As part of his sentence, Tan will have to remain indoors from 10pm to 6am, be electronically tagged for 12 months, serve 240 hours of community service and undergo regular urine testing.

For his drug consumption charge, Tan faced a jail term of between one and 10 years, and a possible fine of up to $20,000.

The punishment he faced for drug trafficking is between five and 20 years’ jail, along with five to 15 strokes of the cane.
