Man whose truck fell off Change Islands ferry still seeking compensation
A man who escaped from his sinking truck that slid off the Change Islands ferry in February has hired a lawyer to help him get compensation for the incident.
Dean Snow was driving his dump truck full of sand off the MV Capt. Earl W. Winsor when he noticed the ship's ramp started to drift away from the wharf.
The dump truck fell into the icy water. Snow was able to escape before the truck was submerged and was helped by someone nearby onto the wharf.
"Obviously our position is that liability is quite clearly against the operators of the ferry," said Steve Marshall, Snow's lawyer. "We haven't sued anybody yet — because I'm hoping there's no need to sue anybody."
A spokesperson said the Department of Transportation and Works said the province wouldn't comment with the matter before the courts.
Marshall wants compensation for the replacement of Snow's truck and the 'traumatic experience' of falling into the water.
"He's self employed, he clears the roads and his truck was like manure to a farmer, that's how he makes his money is with this truck," said Marshall. "It hasn't been easy."
Snow drove to the mainland to buy a new truck so he could continue with contracts he has this winter.
The provincial government said it would investigate "procedures for docking and undocking of vessels, as well loading and unloading of vehicle traffic."
