SIU investigates after shooting leaves man dead in Roncesvalles Village

Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after a shooting left a man dead and a woman seriously injured in Toronto's west end early Sunday.

Special Investigations Unit (SIU) spokesman Jason Gennaro told reporters Sunday that the man suffered a "firearm injury" after police arrived in the area of 55 Howard Park Avenue, located in Roncesvalles Village near Bloor and Dundas streets.

Gennaro said police received a call about a possible shooting just before 6 a.m. Sunday and found the 30-year-old man and 25-year-old woman near that address.

The SIU has identified the deceased male as Jenyon Middleton.

The spokesman declined to say whether police fatally shot the man, but did say the incident occurred on a sidewalk close to an apartment building.

"This is something we are currently investigating," he said. "This is part of the investigation — exactly what transpired at the moment that the person suffered a firearm injury."

According to Toronto paramedics, the man was shot in the torso, while the woman was shot in the leg.

Danny Antonopoulos, deputy commander of Toronto Paramedic Services, said the man had no vital signs en route to hospital.

Gennaro said the man and woman were taken to Toronto's St. Michael's Hospital, where the man was pronounced dead, adding the woman is currently in hospital in serious, but non-life-threatening condition.

The SIU spokesman declined to say if the man was armed or whether the man and woman were known to police. He also declined to comment on the nature of the relationship, if any, between the two victims, but did say they were found together.

"We will be looking at all the surveillance video that we can gather from both businesses and residences in the area, as well as what may have been captured on video inside of [police] cruisers," Gennaro said.

Six investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to investigate the incident, according to the SIU.

"There's a lot that needs to be processed in order for us to determine what happened," Gennaro said.

The police watchdog is urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.

The SIU is called in to investigate any death, serious injury or alleged sexual assault involving police in the province.
