Man, woman robbed 3 businesses before deadly Winnipeg crash, police say

A 30-year-old man who survived Monday's deadly crash in downtown Winnipeg is charged with a string of robberies.

The man, who ran from the crash scene on Portage Avenue but was located and arrested soon after, was involved in the robberies of four businesses as well as a theft of gas, police allege.

Three of the robberies happened shortly before the fatal crash and involved Brandi Manningway, the 27-year-old woman who died, police said.

One of the robberies happened just 15 minutes before the SUV slammed into the side of the Buhler Centre at Portage and Good Street.

The man was charged with the following robberies and theft:

- Nov. 22 — 1800 block of Portage Avenue at 2:30 a.m.

- Nov. 22 — 500 block of Keenleyside Avenue at 5:45 a.m.

- Nov. 22 — Theft of gas in the 6600 block of Roblin Boulevard at 11:55 p.m.

- Nov. 23 — 500 block of Dale Boulevard at 12:25 a.m.

- Nov. 23 — 1700 block of Portage Avenue at 1:15 a.m.

Police said Manningway was with the man during the last three incidents.

Police said they tried to stop the SUV driven by Manningway at 1:20 a.m. Monday near the location of the last robbery. The SUV sped away and officers gave chase but lost sight of it.

At around 1:30 a.m., the SUV driver lost control and the vehicle went onto the sidewalk near Good Street, smashing through a lamppost, sign posts, cement trash bins and a tree before coming to rest against the Buhler Centre.

Manningway was sent to hospital in critical condition and later died.

The 30-year-old man, who was a passenger, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

He is charged with four counts of robbery with a weapon, four counts of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, theft, and five counts of breaching his probation.
