Mandel in New York to meet with Bettman and Katz on downtown arena

EDMONTON - Mayor Stephen Mandel is meeting in New York this morning with Oilers owner Daryl Katz and NHL commissioner Gary Bettman to try to hammer out a deal for a new downtown arena.

Katz has proposed to build a new building for the Oilers on the north end of downtown, but has not been able to agree to terms with the city or secure funding from the province. Bettman called the meeting last week to act as a facilitator between the city and the hockey club.

Mandel and the city manager met Tuesday with Bettman, but the mayor would not speak publicly about what transpired. He is expected to address the media meeting after today’s meeting.
