Manning wins tory nomination in Placentia-St. Mary's

A St. John's lawyer who spent much of her short political life caught up in controversy has won the nomination to run for the tories in the provincial election later this year.

The Progressive Conservative party announced Wednesday night that Judy Manning won the right to run in Placentia - St. Mary's by defeating her opponent Colin Corcoran. The party said Manning defeated Corcoran by a vote count of 602 to 361.

Manning's appointment to cabinet last fall was met with criticism in part because she was unelected but also because of her decision not to run until the general election. She held the portfolio of justice and attorney-general for less than six months when Premier Paul Davis announced he was trimming three seats from his cabinet, Manning being one of them.

People in Newfoundland and Labrador will go to the polls on Nov. 30.
