Many Sask. parks at full capacity over long weekend

Despite a busy Victoria Day weekend at Saskatchewan's parks, a ministry official said it was only an "average to above average long weekend for us."

Tiffany Stephenson with the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport said many of the parks close to the big cities were at 100 per cent capacity. But that wasn't the case with the northern parks, where the weather remains on the chilly side.

For the weekends to come in camping season, Stephenson is eager to share some of Saskatchewan's lesser know attractions.

For example, did you know that your horse is welcome at Saskatchewan Landing and at Cypress Hills?

"They have corrals and tie stalls and water, so you actually get to camp right along with your horses," said Stephenson.

The government has also been working to make the parks more accessible for people with mobility challenges: 23 of the 25 main parks offer barrier-free campsites.

"Those are large campsites with modified picnic tables and barbecues, [and] hard-packed surfaces so it's easier for wheelchairs to get around," said Stephenson.

Not only that, she said, there are now six wheelchairs that people with mobility issues can use to take a dip in the lake, free of charge.

"They go across sand and right into the water and float," said Stephenson.
