'Marcel Aubut' dropped from name of hockey rink in St-Hubert-de-Rivière-du-Loup

Saint-Hubert-de-Rivière-du-Loup is changing the name of its hockey rink, now called the Marcel Aubut arena, to distance itself from the lawyer now facing numerous allegations of sexual harassment.

Aubut, the former president of the Canadian Olympic Committee, stepped down in October amid a growing number of allegations of inappropriate conduct. Aubut was born in the small town in eastern Quebec.

In a resolution adopted unanimously at the beginning of November, councillors and the mayor defended their decision. They said that while Aubut acknowledged his errors, the arena is frequented by young people, and the municipality attaches importance to the respect for women.

"We considered this as an acknowledgment that there were some ugly incidents. So at the council meeting, we said it did not match the values we want to foster as a municipality," Mayor Gilles Couture said.
