Manslaughter charge laid after Martha Street assault victim dies

Woman, 73, charged in homicide of her 85-year-old husband

Winnipeg police have laid manslaughter charges after a man died following a beating on Martha Street earlier this week.

On June 19, 37-year-old Marvin Elias Caribou suffered serious head trauma after a verbal argument escalated, Winnipeg police said.

Emergency crews were called to the 100 block of Martha Street around 11:10 p.m. on a report of an injured man near the Disraeli Freeway and Main Street.

With help from witnesses, police arrested 43-year-old Sydney Eric Norman Fleury in the area a short time later, Const. Jay Murray said.

Paramedics rushed Caribou to hospital in critical condition, but he died from his injuries on June 21.

"The individuals know each other through casual acquaintances and there was a dispute in the area and this led to the assault," Murray said.

Fleury was initially charged with aggravated assault. After Caribou's death, police upgraded the charge to manslaughter.
