In the stirring final two minutes of Martin Luther King Jr.'s 'I Have a Dream' speech during the Civil Rights March on Washington, King told the crowds gathered at the Lincoln memorial to "let freedom ring." King, an American Baptist minister and leader in the civil rights movement, delivered the speech during the Civil Rights March on Washington on Aug. 28, 1963. Each year on the third Monday of January, North Americans celebrate his birth with Martin Luther King Jr. Day. In America, the day is a federal holiday. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968.
