Marvel stars Karen Gillan and Awkwafina are set to team up for new action-comedy Shelly.

Directed by Judy Weng and written by Michael Doneger and Liz Storm, the new movie follows a young woman named Shelly Wheeler (Awkwafina), who was driven out of her town a decade ago after being humiliated by a prom prank. So hardened by the experience, she ended up becoming a cold-blooded hit-woman.

The official synopsis reads: "Revenge threatens to be sweet when she learns her next target is her former high school tormentor, Dianna Park (Gillan). But when Dianna unexpectedly befriends Shelly, the assassin finds herself in with the cool crowd, protecting her old nemesis against another hit crew hired to kill them both. The tone is Mean Girls meets Barry."

Shelly will see Gillan and Awkwafina reunite having previously starred together in Jumanji: The Next Level.

Both actresses are also part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Gillan regularly reprising her role as Nebula for Guardians of the Galaxy and the last two Avengers movies, while Awkwafina is set to star in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the first MCU movie to centre on an Asian superhero.

Back in March, Shang-Chi joined the long list of movies to suspend production due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The movie was shooting in Australia when director Destin Daniel Cretton, who had just welcomed a baby at the time, decided to test for COVID-19 as a precaution.

Following a recommendation from doctors, he then went into self-isolation, bringing first-unit production on the film to a halt.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be released on February 12, 2021.
