Massive hail strikes southern Alberta Monday, causes major damage
Severe storms swept through Alberta Monday night, bringing large and damaging hail to the Calgary area.
Southern Alberta, also known as Hailstorm Alley, was at the forefront of Monday’s severe weather. In addition to the large hail, meteorologists were also keeping a close watch on the tornado potential.
The stormy weather started in the early evening, just in time for the evening rush hour to start, and continued through the night.

While there were no tornado warnings issued or reports of tornadoes, the damage reported from golf ball-sized hail was plenty.
Photos and videos from online show widespread damage to vehicles and houses, as well as major damage to the Calgary International Airport.
The rain from the storms provided much-needed relief in Jasper, although lightning strikes were certainly a major concern for the wildfires.
These storms also ushered in a break from the hot weather, with highs staying in the low 20s for the next few days before things heat back up over the weekend.
