Massive tree limb snaps and kills picnicker in park, California officials say

A picnic in a California park went horribly awry over the weekend when a large tree limb fell and killed someone, officials said.

A San Mateo resident was struck and killed by a falling 60-foot tree limb on Sunday in Washington Park, Burlingame officials wrote in a Facebook post.

Two other people at the park are hospitalized “with significant injuries,” according to officials.

“We express our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of the person who passed away and our wishes for a speedy recovery for the two people in the hospital,” officials wrote.

People have been asked to avoid the Washington Park area near Carolan Avenue “while we conduct a thorough investigation into this tragic accident,” officials said.

No further information about the victims or the tree limb was available as of Sunday evening, according to KTVU, citing a Burlingame police dispatcher.
