'Masters of the Air' Has Lifted Off

Masters of the Air is fully off the ground and about 35,000 feet in the skies. The much-anticipated series hit Apple TV+ on January 26—and judging by its first five episodes, we're in for a hell of a ride.

Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, and Gary Goetzman created the drama, which is based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name. Set during World War II, Masters of the Air follows a group of young fighter pilots who target the Nazi regime. Per the show's logline, the airmen "risk their lives with the 100th Bomb Group, a brotherhood forged by courage, loss, and triumph."

Masters of the Air features a star-studded cast, including Austin Butler, Barry Keoghan, Callum Turner, Sawyer Spielberg (yes, Steven’s son), Ncuti Gatwa, and Lauren McQueen. The triumphant story sheds light on a group of men whose story is often forgotten by our history books. In a press release, Goetzman explained that this project is a long time coming. "Masters of the Air is a salute to the brave men of the 8th Air Force, who, through their courage and brotherhood, helped defeat Nazi Germany in World War II," he said. "Tom and Steven have always wanted to visualize cinematically what our author Don Miller has called this ‘singular event in the history of warfare.’"

So far in the series, the 100th Bomb Group has gone from hopeful and green pilots to disillusioned soldiers scattered around enemy territory. Various missions over Germany have left the group without its two star pilots—and a recent trip over Münster saw just one plane return intact. Unlike the trench warfare of Band of Brothers, these pilots were sitting ducks up in the sky. In episode 6, we'll see how those who were shot down from the skies—yet managed t0 survive—spent the remainder of the war.
