WASHINGTON (AP) — Elections in Wyoming and Alaska on Tuesday could relaunch the political career of a former Republican star and effectively end the career of another — at least for now. Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney is the vice chair of a U.S. House committee seeking to expose the truth behind former President Donald Trump's relentless efforts to stay in power after losing the 2020 election, and his role in fomenting the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Cheney's determination to prevent Trump
In 2016, Joshua Holden, an award-winning American puppeteer, created a special show to perform at the Puppets Up! festival in Almonte, Ont. He'd hoped to perform again, but the international festival that had been running since 2005 was discontinued after the 2016 edition due to a lack of funding and volunteers. However, Puppets Up! has returned this weekend — and Holden will be there once again. After performing across North America, Holden said he was happy to return to Almonte, a town about 5

The two major forest fires in central Newfoundland haven't shrunk and remain out of control, officials said Saturday, but air quality risk to nearby communities remains low. The Paradise Lake fire size is still 17,233 hectares, or 172 square kilometres, the same as it was on Friday, while the Bay d'Espoir Highway fire also remains at 5,614.0 hectares. Crews continued to work the sites through Saturday, using water bombers and helicopters with buckets, according to the Department of Forestry. A s
After a late start to the season, some sunflower growers on P.E.I. are optimistic about what lies ahead for the beloved flower. Crystal Burke-Cheverie, who helps run Fortune Bridge Farms in Souris, P.E.I., says dry weather over the last month was making it difficult for sunflowers to bloom. However, recent rain means flowers are now in bloom and the demand is high, Burke-Cheverie said. "They seem to be really popular all over the Island. Everyone you talk to likes sunflowers," she said. In an update from the Department of Forestry, the Bay d'Espoir highway fire is considered 20% contained as of Sunday. Favourable weather conditions have helped crews tackle the fire in recent days. However, the nearby Paradise Lake fire is still out of control. For both fires, the department has assigned 2 helicopters, along with air and ground crews to fight the blaze. Roads reopen as cabin owners ignore warnings This news comes as the department has reopened a number of forest access roads in

It expanded with the assistance of Canada Border Services Agency, the RCMP, the OPP, the Toronto Police Service, York Regional Police Service, Halton Regional Police Service, Peterborough Police Service, and Vancouve
For parents of transgender children, normal kids' activities — like going to summer camp — aren't so simple. Jan Gootjes, a New Brunswick mother of a transgender boy, knows this all too well. She regularly screens programs and activities to make sure they'll welcome him, will use his correct pronouns and provide the right accommodations. That's what she did one day in the summer of 2020, when her son asked if he could go to Caton's Island summer camp and stay in a cabin with his male friends. Bu
Alberta Premier Jason Kenney condemned a controversial prize-winning essay that's been criticized for being sexist and racist during his provincewide radio call-in program, but also appeared to downplay the controversy it generated. The topic was the first that host Wayne Nelson raised during Saturday's show on CHQR and CHED, and Kenney responded there was "clearly a breakdown" in how the judges assessed the essays, adding they "screwed up." Nelson had noted in the opening of the program that wh

BRIGHTON, England (AP) — Nick Pope conjured two fine saves and Kieran Trippier made a goal-line clearance as Newcastle's two England internationals helped the team grind out a 0-0 draw at Brighton in the Premier League on Saturday. Pope racked up a second straight clean sheet since joining Newcastle from relegated Burnley, thwarting both Adam Lallana and Solly March at the Amex Stadium. March thought he had scored with a low shot through a crowd of players in the first half, only for Trippier to
MILAN (AP) — The leader of Italy's Democratic Party warned Saturday of the threats that Italy's right-wing nationalistic parties pose to European democracy in a video released in multiple languages, and promised that his party would keep Italy at the center of the European Union if it wins the country's early parliamentary election next month. WOLVERHAMPTON, England (AP) — Wolverhampton goalkeeper Jose Sa saved a late penalty by Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic as the teams played out a 0-0 draw in the Premier League at Molineux on Saturday. Referee John Brooks pointed to the spot following Rayan Ait-Nouri’s ill-timed challenge on Bobby Cordova-Reid, but
The family of a 60-year-old mail courier who was found dead in his Metchosin, B.C., home after a prison break from a nearby minimum-security facility in 2019 is suing the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC), saying it didn't follow its own policies in how it handled and responded to the two inmates.
