Matt Damon talks COVID vaccine hesitancy a year after ‘Contagion’ PSA

Stillwater star Matt Damon looks back on the pro-science Contagion PSA that was released at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, and also reveals his feelings about the fact that only half of the country is vaccinated.

Video Transcript

- Mr Emhoff, your wife is dead.

- What are you talking about? What happened to her?

- Early into the pandemic, you did a PSA about Covid-19 and trusting science as a lot of people were revisiting Contagion. That movie really exploded in popularity again. I mean, how are you doing these days as it's clear a large portion of America, probably a lot of guys like Dale Baker and still in Stillwater, are using the vaccine, are still sort of refusing to trust science.

- Yeah look, I mean, there are a lot of reasons that people have and I don't want to belittle them. It's tough for me, I have a couple of friends who are immunocompromised and they can't get the vaccine. So they have no choice but to rely on the rest of us to do our part to kind of get to Herd immunity. And so I look at it that way. I think it's just kind of a way people decide to frame this thing for themselves. And I wish at the beginning of this, people came out and said, look if we all do this, then we'll protect each other better. Right? Rather than, well I'm not in this cohort, so I don't have to worry, and it's not going to hurt me that much. It's just about looking at it as a me thing or as an us thing. But look, it's a personal choice. You know, that's the beauty of America. It's a free country. And none of us would have it any other way. But look, I fall heavily on the side of trusting science more than and something you read on Facebook.
