Matthew de Grood Calgary stabbings trial date set for next May

A trial has been scheduled for Matthew de Grood, the man accused in the stabbing deaths of five people at a Brentwood house party in northwest Calgary last April.

Jury selection will begin on May 12 and the trial is scheduled for May 16 to 27, 2016.

Lawrence Hong, 27, Joshua Hunter, 23, Kaitlin Perras, 23, Zackariah Rathwell, 21, and Jordan Segura, 22, were killed the stabbing attack on April 15, 2014. They had been celebrating the end of university classes.

De Grood was arrested a short distance away and has been held in custody since, charged with five counts of first-degree murder.

His parents, including his father who is a high-ranking Calgary Police Service officer, were in attendance at the courthouse on Friday.

Because of his father's position with the police force, de Grood's trial will be heard by an out of town judge.

A psychiatric report on whether or not de Grood should be found not criminally responsible for the murders remains sealed.
