He is the eldest of six children, including five half siblings.
Here's everything to know about his parents and siblings.
As the world mourns "Friends" star Matthew Perry, who died Saturday after he was found unresponsive in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home, his family is speaking out and thanking his fans.
"We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother," Perry's family said Sunday in a statement to People. "Matthew brought so much joy to the world, both as an actor and a friend. You all meant so much to him and we appreciate the tremendous outpouring of love."
Perry, the eldest child of Suzanne and John Bennett Perry, was born in Williamstown, Massachusetts, on August 19, 1969. He is the only child the couple had together — less than a year after Matthew was born, the couple split and have both since remarried.
Suzanne has four other children with her second husband, "Dateline" correspondent Keith Morrison. John has one child with his second wife, Debbie Boyle.
Here's what to know about Matthew Perry's family.
Suzanne Perry and Keith Morrison
In his memoir, "Friends, Lovers and The Big Terrible Thing," Matthew wrote that his mother Suzanne was a pageant queen until she met his dad.
She later worked as a press secretary for Canadian President Pierre Trudeau, father of the current Canadian President Justin Trudeau. In fact, Justin and Matthew went to school together.
Matthew lived with his mother Suzanne after his parents split. In his memoir, Matthew said that Suzanne was "away at work a lot." She was later offered another job as a news anchor in Toronto, which meant they had to move again, which Matthew wasn't happy about.
"I haven't even been included in the decision," he wrote in his memoir.
Matthew said his mother was later fired from the anchor job for making a joke about a beauty pageant.
In 1981, Suzanne got married to fellow broadcast journalist Keith Morrison, who rose to fame on NBC's "Dateline."
The couple have four children together: Caitlin, Emily, Will, and Madeline. Morrison also had a son from a previous relationship.
As for his relationship with his stepfather, Matthew said in his memoir that Morrison always took his mother's side.
"I can't tell you how many times my mother has done something that I may have taken issue with and I've been told by Keith that it never happened," Matthew writes. "Keith lived for my mother."
John Bennett Perry and Debbie Boyle
Matthew's father John was a successful actor who got his big break after starring as the "Old Spice" sailor in a series of popular 1970s commercials.
Before retiring in 2011, John starred in "Little House on the Prairie," "George of the Jungle" and "Murder, She Wrote."
John also acted alongside his son in numerous shows and films including "Fools Rush In," "Scrubs," and "Friends." John appeared in season 4, episode 18 of "Friends" as the father of Rachel's (Jennifer Aniston) boyfriend.
John remarried in 1981 to Debbie Boyle and they had one child together, Maria "Mia" Perry. Matthew called Boyle "the catch of the century" in his memoir.
The actor wrote that he went to live with John and his stepmom at 15 because he was fighting with his mother and wanted to learn more about his father.
"Mom and I were fighting all the time; tennis was the only place I was happy, and even then, I was angry, or sobbing, even when I won," he wrote.
Matthew said that leaving caused a "great rift" in his family despite his parents agreeing that it was the right decision.
Caitlin Morrison
Caitlin Morrison is Keith Morrison and Suzanne's first child after they got married in 1981.
Matthew said in his memoir that he loved Caitlin but quickly felt like he was no longer part of the family after her birth.
"There was a family growing around me, a family I didn't really feel a part of," he wrote.
Still, he loved being around his half-siblings as a child.
"I loved playing with them all, babysitting them, playing dumb games with them. There is no greater sound on the face of the planet than a child's laughter," he wrote.
Caitlin has appeared in one film, "The Whole Ten Yards," which also starred her brother Matthew.
Emily Morrison
Emily Morrison was born in 1985 to Morrison and Suzanne.
Matthew said in his memoir that he loved Emily just like her older sister, though her presence added to his sense of not having a place in the family.
Emily, Mia, and Madeline are also mentioned as some of the family members who visited Matthew at the hospital in 2019 after his colon burst.
Emily has made a few public appearances over the years, including attending the red carpet premiere of Matthew's film "The Whole Nine Yards."
Maria "Mia" Perry
Maria Perry, who goes by Mia, is the only daughter of John and his second wife Boyle. She was born in 1986.
In his memoir, Matthew describes his younger sister as "the hub of the Perry family."
Will Morrison
Will is Suzanne and Morrison's third child, born in 1987.
Will is not mentioned much in Matthew's memoir, but the pair attended the premiere of "Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone" together in November 2001.
Madeline Morrison
Madeline is Suzanne and Morrison's youngest child. She was born in 1989.
Madeline has appeared on numerous red carpets with Matthew.
