Matthew Schreindorfer announces he's now cancer-free

After a year-long struggle with an aggressive form of lymphoma, Matthew Schreindorfer is now cancer-free.

The 26-year-old Montreal-area man made the announcement on the Help Save Matthew Facebook page on Sunday.

Schreindorfer and wife Katia Luciani raised more than $835,000 online several months ago to send him to New York City, where he participated in a clinical trial and underwent an experimental T-cell treatment for his acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).

The T-cell treatment at New York's Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center involved modifying Schreindorfer's white blood cells in a lab for about 10 days and then re-injecting the cells into his body.

The American trial has so far had an 88 to 90 per cent success rate.

Schreindorfer was diagnosed with ALL just over a year ago at the age of 24, shortly after returning from his honeymoon with Luciani. He had undergone all treatments available in Canada for someone with ALL.

The Laval couple posted this to Facebook on Sunday:

"Yesterday was a day for celebrations!

We forgot to say in the last update that we received Matt's +100 day bone marrow biopsy results and apparently he's got some squeaky clean bone marrow! The cancer is very much GONE! How can we forget such news!? The transplant worked spectacularly and he's now officially, truly, definitely cancer-free!

As for me, I'm slowly returning to my good ol' work desk after Thanksgiving! Although I'm a bit nervous, we think it'll bring back some [normalcy] and routine into our lives, which inevitably means that things are moving forward. Matt will now have to learn how to cook delicious meals for when I get home from a hard days work!

Also, two of our closest friends got engaged last New Year's and we were thankful to be able to be there to celebrate their love yesterday! It's in these unforgettable moments that we truly appreciate life and what everyone has done for us in the last year! Don't worry though; the engagement party was outdoors so the risk of germs was low and he was careful! We got all dressed up and Matt's hair was gelled (It's that long already! He even got his first haircut two weeks ago!). It felt so great to feel normal again, like 26-year-old kids enjoying life to the fullest!"
