UPDATE, June 12, 1 p.m. ET: Matty Healy and Gabriette Bechtel are, in fact, engaged. Healy’s mother, Denise Welch, confirmed the news on the TV talk show Loose Women on June 12. Welch also confirmed that Healy had Gabriette’s black diamond engagement ring custom made for her.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled,” Welch added. “She’s absolutely gorgeous.… We couldn’t be happier. She is everything that I would want in a daughter-in-law.”

Are Matty Healy and Gabbriette Bechtel engaged? Are they trolling Taylor Swift? Both? Neither? Bechtel posted a photo to her Instagram Stories implying that she and the frontman of The 1975 are getting married, and the whole thing is rather mysterious and shady—especially if you’re a Swifty.

Let me give you some context. You probably already know about Healy and Swift’s short-lived romance in the spring of 2023. Sometime after they broke up, Healy started dating Bechtel, who is friends and former bandmates with Charli XCX, who is engaged to Healy’s bandmate George Daniel and has a new album titled Brat. Keeping up so far?

On June 11, Matty Healy and Gabbriette Bechtel were spotted at a Charli XCX concert in New York City, per Vulture. That night Bechtel posted to her IG stories with a picture of her left hand, sporting a black ring, on an unidentified, sheer-black-tights-clad bottom. “Marrying The 1975 is very brat,” the text read in green.

Aside from the fact that Swift just released an album largely about Healy titled The Tortured Poets Department, the apparent engagement announcement could be read as Swift shade because of the “brat” reference. One song from Charli’s Brat album, “Sympathy Is a Knife,” seems to call out Swift in the lyrics, “Don’t wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend’s show. / Fingers crossed behind my back, I hope they break up.”

I think I’ll let the Swifties litigate this one on their own.
