May 20 baseball playoff update: Columbia, Gibault, Father McGivney & Nashville advance
The IHSA baseball postseason is currently taking place.
Here are the latest results from regional championship games involving metro-east teams.
Class 1A
Christ Our Rock Lutheran Regional
Top-seeded Christ Our Rock Lutheran eased past No. 4 seed New Athens 5-2 to capture the regional title Saturday, May 20.
The Silver Stallions improved to 22-4, while the Yellow Jackets finished the season at 16-8.
Christ Our Rock Lutheran now advances to the Greenville University Sectional and will face Greenfield (Coop) (13-20) at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 25.
Valmeyer Regional
Second-seeded Gibault rolled to the regional championship Saturday, May 20, downing third-seeded Marissa (Coop) 11-1.
The Hawks improved to 19-14, while the Meteors finished 15-10.
Gibault now advances to the Greenville University Sectional and will face Pawnee (18-10) at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 24.
Class 2A
Roxana Regional
Top-seeded Father McGivney had little trouble capturing the regional crown, downing Roxana 8-0 on Saturday, May 20.
The Griffins improved to 36-1 while the Shells ended the season at 12-22.
Father McGivney advances to the Breese Central Sectional and will face Teutopolis (17-15) at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 24.
Columbia Regional
Second-seeded Columbia eased to the regional championship Saturday, May 20, shutting out fifth-seeded Breese Central 5-0.
The Eagles — who defeated the Cougars 13-1 and 10-7 earlier this season in Cahokia Conference action — improved to 30-4. Breese Central finished 22-12-1.
Columbia advances to the Breese Central Sectional and will face Newton (20-11) at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 25.
Sparta Regional
Top-seeded Nashville handled No. 4 seed Freeburg 5-1 to take the regional title Saturday, May 20.
The Hornets improved to 28-6, while the Midgets finished at 22-14.
Nashville now advances to the DuQuoin Sectional and will face Anna-Jonesboro (16-8) at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 24.
