As the only candidate putting their name forward, Gale Matheson has been elected by acclamation as the next Mayor of Wapella.
Matheson served on Town Council with one term as Mayor during the early 2000s and decided to return to municipal politics when the recent call for nominations went out.
One of his concerns is that of joining with the RM of Martin, therefore abandoning town status and the perception that many communities in the same situation hold, being a loss of identity.
“I just want to see us survive and work together and keep it going as best as we can,” Matheson said. “We got a couple of projects that are out there, and they’re gonna be hard to try to juggle those.”
The decision to return to council was common sense for Matheson.
The next meeting of Wapella Town Council is Dec. 19 when one anticipated order of business will be to officially swear Matheson in as mayor.
