Police appeal for help in McCowan Park homicide investigation

Toronto police are appealing for help from the public after determining that the death of a man found in McCowan Park earlier this week was a homicide.

A passerby spotted a body with "obvious signs of trauma" in the park around 10:30 a.m. Monday. Police have since determined the victim was 22-year-old Nitiyand Gary Singh, known in the community as Gary.

Homicide Det.-Sgt. Mike Carbone said Wednesday that police will not be releasing the official cause of death, but did reveal that "an edged weapon" was used in the alleged killing.

According to Carbone, Singh's family contacted police on Saturday, May 23, and told them they were concerned because they hadn't heard from him for some time.

Detectives discovered that Singh was exchanging text messages with a friend throughout the evening on Thursday, May 21. The last message sent from his phone went out at approximately 1 a.m. ET on Friday, May 22.

Carbone says Singh frequented a strip mall on Danforth Road near McCowan Park.

Detectives are asking anyone with potentially helpful information — especially anyone who may have seen him around 1 a.m. ET on May 22 — to contact them or Crime Stoppers.
