“Mean Girls” Star Angourie Rice and Her Mother Kate Co-Wrote a YA Novel — See the Cover! (Exclusive)
‘Stuck Up and Stupid’ will be published next year in the U.S.
Angourie Rice teamed up with a special co-author for her debut novel.
The Mean Girls actress, 23, is sharing the cover of her young adult novel, Stuck Up and Stupid, exclusively with PEOPLE. The book, publishing next year from Candlewick Press, is co-written with Angourie’s mother, playwright Kate Rice.
Described as a modern take on the classic Jane Austen novel Pride and Prejudice, Stuck Up and Stupid centers on Lily, who is looking forward to a summer at the beach with her friends. Her plans get interrupted when the superstar Dorian Khan comes to town, along with his entourage of movie star friends.
While the locals can’t get enough of Dorian and his crew, Lily finds them, and especially Dorian, to be arrogant and annoying. As they continue to run into each other, though, Lily starts to question what she really knows about Dorian, and if she had the wrong idea about him after all.
A novel about actors is fitting for Anjourie, whose recent roles include movie-musical Mean Girls, where she starred as Cady Heron, and Apple TV+’s thriller series The Last Thing He Told Me.

Speaking on the But Are You Happy? podcast on June 5, Angourie and Kate discussed working on the novel together, and Angourie mentioned how it helped her in her personal life as well.
“For me, it felt like a gift for us as well to write it,” Angourie said. “Because I remember I was sort of going through a difficult time while we were writing it. And I remember Kate telling me, ‘How would our protagonist, how would she deal with this … put into her these qualities that you want to find in yourself.”
