Meet the heroes Ottawa deserves

Ottawa reached a major population milestone recently, and with it, officially became a metropolis.

Like all metropoles — and Bonnie Tyler — we need a hero. A superhero.

So what does our caped crusader look like? What are their special powers? Do they have a sidekick?

We asked for your super ideas, and CBC Ottawa's resident artist, Matthew Kupfer, went to his drawing board.

Shadow Laurier

Shadow Laurier can melt into the darkness and fly through the night. He conjures shadowy magic that paralyzes his opponents with nostalgia.

His weakness is his vanity. He refuses to reconsider an unpopular costume upgrade, even though it threatens to sap him of his powers.

Elle Arty

Elle Arty built her portal ray gun so she could flit from one part of the city to another. Her loyal service dog, Presto, never leaves her side.

She sometimes gets delayed, but never fear: she will arrive to save the day … eventually.

Green Belt

Green Belt protects the city's green spaces and waterways. She shoots decontamination rays from the buckle of her eponymous accessory.

Her current mission: cleaning up Victoria Island. She can also control the weather and empower trees to move.

Smooth Rider

By day, mild-mannered civil servant Nicholas Northbound works for Transport Canada.

By night he is Smooth Rider, filling in potholes, melting snowbanks and moving parked cars from bike lanes.

Gargoyle

Ugly but charming, Gargoyle is a tortured soul. He can usually be found perched on the Peace Tower, where he remains haunted by the fire of 1916.

Don't cross him, though: Gargoyle has a nasty habit of turning his foes to granite.
