Member of ‘SG Nasi Lemak’ Telegram group admits to having 462 obscene films
SINGAPORE — A man accused of transmitting obscene materials via a Telegram chat group known as SG Nasi Lemak admitted on Friday (18 September) to possessing 462 obscene films.
Justin Lee Han Shi, 20, was the first to plead guilty out of four men who were hauled to court in October last year over their activities in the chat group, which shared voyeuristic images of women either clothed or nude.
The other three are Liong Tianwei, 37, Leonard Teo Min Xuan, 26, and a 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named as his identity is protected under the Children and Young Persons Act. Liong and Teo are believed to be the administrators of the group, which had more than 44,000 members before it was shut down.
The group was outed after more users started taking to Twitter to express their disgust over the nature of the images.
Liong and Teo will return to court on 5 October and 30 September respectively for further mentions of their cases, whereas the 17-year-old will return on 23 September.
Lee to be assessed for probation
Lee pleaded guilty to possessing 462 obscene films in his mobile phone and laptop, while his charges of transmitting pornographic material to SG Nasi Lemak through Telegram, and possessing 556 obscene images on his electronic devices will be taken into consideration for sentencing.
The police received information about the group on 19 March last year.
On 14 October last year at about 11am, police officers raided Lee’s residence and found that he owned several electronic devices; three mobile phones, a tablet and a laptop. Officers seized these devices.
After his devices were sent for forensic examination, 462 obscene video files were unearthed from one of his mobile phones.
Lee admitted to being one of the members in SG Nasi Lemak. He also confessed to downloading pornographic images and videos online for his personal consumption. He also forwarded some of the content to others in the SG Nasi Lemak group upon request.
A probation suitability report was called for Lee, who will return to court on 16 October.
Probation is a rehabilitative, community-based sentencing option usually given to offenders under the age of 21 after they are assessed for their capacity for reform.
For possessing any obscene film, a breach of the Films Act, an offender can be jailed up to six months and/or fined up to a maximum of $20,000.
