'It feels pretty incredible': Memorial University takes gold at national curling championship

Memorial University has won gold at the USports Men's Curling Championship.

The Seahawks team, with skip Adam Boland, went undefeated throughout the national university tournament at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

Boland's team beat the University of Alberta 8 to 4 in the final match Wednesday afternoon.

"I actually can't believe it," Boland said after the winning game. "I called my parents right after, and I couldn't even speak … it's so hard to explain."

Boland, along with lead Evan Kearley, third Stephen Trickett and second Zach Young scored three points in the sixth end and four in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

The Memorial University team curled 85 per cent throughout the gold medal game.

According to Memorial University, the Seahawks team finishes its season with a perfect 17-0 record.

"The last time Team Boland lost a match was in the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Curling Championship to Team Gushue," a release from the university notes.

The MUN team competed in February's provincial championships for the right to represent Newfoundland and Labrador in the Brier, and are planning to compete again in next year's playdowns.

Boland said his team was not even able to make the Atlantic University tournament the past two years, so to go all the way to the national final in 2017 — and win — was a "dream come true."

"Just to get out of St. John's was an accomplishment for us," he said.

"If someone would have told me this at the beginning of the year, I would have said they were crazy. I can't believe it's actually here."
