Mexican student string quartet serenade Windsor-Essex

Audiences across Windsor-Essex are getting a taste of Mexican music this week, courtesy of a student string quartet.

Emmanuel Ramirez, Ridkey Barajas, Oscar Arredondo and David Rizo are students at Conservatorio de Musica y Artes de Celaya, a music school in Celaya, Mexico. They've been performing one-hour concerts across the region since Wednesday.

The series — now in its second year — is sponsored by the Consulate of Mexico in Leamington.

"One of the tasks or the mandates we have as a representative of Mexico is to share our culture with the countries we are close to," said Consul Alberto Bernal, adding that Mexico wants to share more than just economic and political ties with Canada. "[Culture] is the best way to [bring] people together."

On Wednesday, the group performed at a retirement home in Kingsville and a Mennonite church in Leamington.

The group continued in Leamington Thursday with performances at the Municipal Building and Rick Atkin Park (near the Leamington Marina) before heading to Windsor for a concert at the Capitol Theatre.

Lakeside Park in Kingsville will host the quartet's final performance in the region Friday.
