Michael Keaton Met His Longtime Girlfriend in a Chance Encounter in L.A.: ‘I Kind of Went, Woah’ (Exclusive)

"She turned out to be a very nice person," the 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice' star says of his girlfriend Marni Turner

Michael Keaton had a meet-cute with girlfriend Marni Turner that seems straight out of a movie.

Asked how the pair first met, Keaton — who has been linked to Turner since around 2016 — tells PEOPLE their initial encounter was on a street in L.A. The Beetlejuice Beetlejuice star was struck by her beauty and introduced himself.

“I kind of went, ‘Whoa.’ And then she turned out to be a very nice person,” he says.

Though Keaton, 73, has taken Turner, 51, to events like the Vanity Fair Oscar Party, he has largely kept his relationship out of the spotlight.

But he did share that his companion has an eye for fashion. “She prides herself in going — like somebody walks up to her, and goes, ‘That is a fantastic!’ And she'll go, ‘Thank you. $39, T.J.Maxx.’ That's kind of her thing. She's known for it,” he says with a smile.

“I lost my nephew to fentanyl, heroin and fentanyl. So, that obviously made it even more special,” Keaton says of doing the series, for which he won an Emmy. “It's one reason I did it. Some people think it's the only reason I did it. It wasn't. It was just really well written and I would've done it anyway. But it definitely pushed it over the top for me just to honor him, I guess, but also bring awareness to it for other people.”

Filming it was emotional, and Turner was a source of support. “I could not have gotten through Dopesick without her,” he says.

The Oscar nominee, who turned down roles at times to be present for his son when he was growing up, says he still does that now, too, even though Sean is an adult.

“I started going, ‘I'm not hanging out with him, and his kids, and Rachel quite enough,’” says Keaton, who also stars in the upcoming dramedy Goodrich. “And we see each other a lot.”
