Michael Kydd breached code of conduct, Mount Saint Vincent confirms

Michael Kydd's Hamilton TEDx talk about public shaming cancelled

Mount Saint Vincent University confirmed Friday that former instructor Michael Kydd violated their code of conduct by having an affair with a student and he was dismissed.

"Though the instructor submitted his resignation, we committed to completing our investigation in keeping with our responsibility to our students and to equitable university protocols," university president Ramona Lumpkin wrote Friday.

"We've now completed that investigation and the outcome is the dismissal of the part-time instructor for confirmed code of conduct violations."

Last week, Kydd, 40, admitted to violating the code of conduct by having a consensual affair with a 38-year-old female student.

Lumpkin said the breach was the non-disclosure of a relationship with a student that resulted in academic bias.

"These matters are normally dealt with between the parties concerned and are not released publicly; however, this matter took a unique course so requires a unique response, including notification of the Mount community," Lumpkin wrote.

"While information was brought forward by one other student through the course of our investigation, no additional breaches of the code were identified."

Kydd also resigned as president of Merit Nova Scotia, an association of non-unionized contractors.

The affair came to light when Glen Canning, the father of Rehtaeh Parsons, tweeted an intimate image that Kydd had sent to the student.
