Michael Nehass interrupts Crown and judge, asks for legal aid

Michael Nehass was supposed to argue in Yukon Supreme Court today against the Crown's request for him to undergo a psychiatric assessment.

If approved, the assessment would be used to determine whether the Crown will seek an application for dangerous and long term offender status.

But, instead of his expected argument, Nehass told the court he wants a legal aid lawyer.

Nehass, who was representing himself today, has been through a number of lawyers.

He has been incarcerated in Whitehorse for more than three years. Convictions against Nehass include forceable confinement and assault with a weapon.

'Shut up until I finish!'

Nehass interrupted the Crown and the judge several times during proceedings.

"Would you shut up until I finish!" Justice Scott Brooker said to him at one point. "I'm not going to put up with this."

Nehass was told to fill out a request for legal aid. The head of legal aid is being asked to address the court in tomorrow's hearing.

Two days was scheduled to hear arguments over the application for the assessment.
