Based on a 1994 novel and other works by author Christopher Pike, the series is set in a hospice for terminally ill teens.

Ilonka moves to the hospice after being diagnosed with terminal thyroid cancer, but from the very first time she sees the rambling old house where the hospice is based, she feels a sense of deja vu.

She becomes convinced that the house holds secrets about a former patient who went missing under mysterious circumstances and then re-emerged cured of her disease.

Experiencing terrifying visions around every corner, Ilonka is not quite sure whether they are real or an effect of her medication.

Meanwhile, her fellow patients invite her to join a secret social club where they meet each night after lights out and take it in turns to terrify each other with the scariest horror stories they can think of.

They share a pact to offer proof of an afterlife by trying to contact the group after they die - but will any of them manage to make themselves heard from the other side?

The TV series has been created from Pike's novels by Mike Flanagan, making it part of the Flanaverse - the filmmaker's collection of scary shows on Netflix.

However, while viewers might recognise Flanagan's style in the series, it is aimed more at a teenage audience and is not part of The Haunting anthology which so far includes The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor.

Flanagan is also behind Netflix horror hit Midnight Mass, and has another series slated for the streaming service, The Fall of the House of Usher, based on the story by Edgar Allan Poe.
